The global marine biotechnology sector is rapidly evolving, with seaweeds emerging as one of the most promising sustainable marine resources. Often referred to as the “forests of the sea,” seaweeds are among the most productive and ecologically vital marine resources on Earth. They hold immense potential across multiple sectors including food, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, agriculture, environmental services, and climate solutions.
Recognizing the growing importance of seaweed resources and India’s expanding Blue Economy initiatives, the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), Kochi organized S.E.A.W.E.E.D.S. 2026 – International Symposium on Seaweeds: Value Chains, Climate Solutions and Blue Economy Pathways from 5–7 March 2026. This landmark event, the first of its kind in India, brought together leading scientists, policymakers, industry stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and researchers from around the world to promote collaboration, share knowledge, and accelerate the sustainable development of the seaweed sector.
The symposium attracted over 500 participants from 13 countries, highlighting the increasing global interest in seaweed-based innovations and their wide-ranging applications. The event featured plenary sessions, technical discussions, an international expo, farmers’ meet, and business networking sessions, providing a platform to explore innovations, policy frameworks, and commercial opportunities across the seaweed value chain.
